We remember

As the unofficial start to summer, Memorial Weekend is celebrated with road trips, beach visits and lots of furniture sales.

And at parks and Police headquarters throughout the area, civilians and veterans alike will remember the many people who gave their lives for our freedom, with Memorial Day services & commemorations. Here are a few local events:

Coconut Creek - 9 a.m. ceremony at Veterans Park, 3550 Lyons Rd.

Coral Springs - 9 a.m. ceremony at Veterans Park, 8601 Royal Palm Blvd.

Davie - 10 a.m. parade & service at Bergeron Rodeou Grounds of Davie, 4271 Davie Road.

Fort Lauderdale - 9 a.m. tribute at Lauderdale Memorial Park, 2001 S.W. 4th Ave.; 11 a.m. ceremony at Sandy Ninninger Statue on Riverwalk, behind the Broward Center, 201 S.W. 5th Ave.

Miami Beach - beginning at 10:30 a.m., the city, the American Legion Miami Beach Post 85 and VFW Miami Beach Post 3559 will hold a wreath-laying ceremony and 21-gun salute to honor the memory of the men and women who've lost their lives fighting for freedom. The ceremony will be at Miami Beach Police Headquarters, 1100 Washington Ave.

Miami Springs - 9:30 a.m. ceremony takes place in front of the War Monument on Curtiss Parkway. The event, featuring music, and honor guard and guest speakers is sponsored in part by the Daughters of the American Revolution, John MacDonald Chapter.

North Lauderdale - 10 a.m. wreath laying ceremony at North Lauderdale Veterans Memorial, Kimberly Blvd. & Rock Island Rd.

North Miami Beach - at 9 a.m. the city unveils the restored World War II anti-aircraft gun that's served as a war memorial since 1955. It's set in the median at N.E. 19th Avenue and 167th Street. Following the rededication, the city's annual Memorial Day celebration moves to All Wars Memorial Park (16501 NE 16th Ave) from 10 a.m. - noon.

Pembroke Pines - 9 - 11 a.m., ceremony & commemoration at Fletcher Park, 7900 Johnson St.

Plantation - 9:30 a.m. ceremony at Plantaton Veterans Park, 1776 Lauderdale West Dr.

South Miami / Coral Gables Elks Lodge - 11 a.m. picnic & commemoration at the South Miami Elks Lodge, 6304 S.W. 78th St.

Sunrise - 9 a.m. Ceremony at Sunrise Civic Center Amphitheatre, 10610 W. Oakland Park Blvd.

Surfside - 10 a.m. Ceremony includes a presentatino of colars, local Scout tropps and special guests. Veterans Park, 8791 Collins Ave.
