Discovery Camp Adventures for kids ages 6-12

Day Camps are designed to give students entire days filled with exploration and hands-on learning. Camp runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (before and after care is available). Camp fee includes all workshop materials and chaperoned exhibit exploration. Students should bring two snacks, lunch and a drink. Subway Café is available as a lunch option. One-day camps are $50 for MODS members and $55 for non-members.
Five-day camps are $200 for MODS members and $225 for non-members.

Discover the different parts of our Museum that make it so unique. Dig for dinosaurs in our Boneyard, create a sugar cube pyramid as you unearth the secrets of Ancient Egypt, and take a tour behind the scenes with our sharks and other critters.

Busted: The Science Behind Myths June 22 – 26, 2009
Do you know what happens if you swallow gum? Can you really create a comet using just dry ice and sand? Join us this week to debunk some of the most popular scientific myths! Work with dry ice, soda, pop rocks and bubble gum. Put them all together and what do you get? You’ll have to join us to find out!

Urban Explorer: Science In Your City June 29 – July 3, 2009
Ever wonder what makes Fort Lauderdale so great? Join us this week to find out and conduct some scientific experiments along the way that highlight this sunny city. Learn how sunscreen works, create a solar car, beat the heat with homemade sun tea, and even cook food using the sun!

Drip Drop Everywhere July 6 – 10, 2009
Make an aquifer that turns stinkable water into drinkable water, become a budding botanist for the week as you create a Wilson head and biomes in a bag. Get up-close-and-personal with some carnivorous plants as you make your own mini-greenhouse.

Can You Dig It July 13 – 17, 2009
Get out your magnifying glasses, brushes and chisels and become a pint-sized paleontologist for the week! Study the fossils of animals that lived many years ago and even get up-close-and-personal with some living fossils. Create an edible ammonite and dig for fossils in our dig pit.

Whodunit? Forensic Investigation July 20 – 24, 2009
Think you can solve the case? Become a Crime Scene Investigator as you learn the basics of Forensic Science. Learn how to interpret fingerprints, shoe prints, lip prints, and even tooth impressions! Test out your detective skills as you try to solve our Museum Mystery.

Destination Aerospace July 27 – 31, 2009
Attention, space cadets! Travel to infinity and beyond without leaving the ground! Discover the science behind space travel and make your own stomp rockets. Take a closer look at the stars in the sky inside in our planetarium and test your design skills in Mission: Egg Drop.

Candy Chemistry August 3 – 7, 2009
Do you go wild for Wonka or scream hooray for Hershey’s? Then this camp is your golden ticket to a confectioner’s paradise! Use some kooky chemistry to create a cluster of colorful candies. Make your own lollipops, gummi bears, lickable art and much more. Put a cherry on top of your week with a trip to Kilwin’s Ice Cream Shop.

No Bones About It! August 10 – 14, 2009
Did you know that a sneeze can travel faster than 100 miles per hour? Discover the weird and wonderful facts about the human body that make humans unique. Crazy Critter Camp August 17 – 21, 2009
Discover what slithers, hops, crawls, and flies at the Museum this week! Get up close and personal with our coral reef critters, underground inhabitants, and desert dwellers. Learn what it takes to keep our animals happy and healthy in our Life Sciences department. Even hunt for real shark teeth and create some septic Iguana saliva!
